Course Memo
The primary purpose of this course is to introduce the foundations of the school counseling profession including history and philosophy, school counselor professional identity, professional membership and development, school systems and advocacy within the profession. Special attention will be devoted to the American School Counseling Model's Comprehensive Framework including all components of a comprehensive school counseling model. Students will learn the components of the ASCA model including how to use data to inform program and school planning programming for all students. Students will review the American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards for School Counseling and Position Statements related to ethical issues, learn to use the ethical decision making model, Solutions to Ethical Problems in Schools (STEPS), and explore a variety of ethical dilemmas commonly faced on-the-job by school counselors.
