Course Memo

The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with theories, pertinent research, skills and techniques that are considered to be prerequisites for effective group counseling. Students will participate in a group counseling experience and class discussions will focus on how best to facilitate a group. Subject areas covered include group communication patterns-both verbal and nonverbal, leadership of the group, trust development, cohesion, risk-taking, group membership skills, facilitation skills, and conflict resolution skills. Students are expected to demonstrate their ability to plan, conduct, and terminate a group activity as an outcome of the course. Students will be introduced to the professional standards of group counseling dynamics as well as ethical and legal considerations. (4/14)
